1957 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1957 Walker Cup was the 16th time this competition took place. Following the United States victory, the all-time standings were 15 wins for Team USA, one win for Team GB&I.

Final Score: United States 8, Great Britain & Ireland 3

Dates Played: August 30-31, 1957

Location: The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Team Captains: Gerald Micklem for Great Britain & Ireland, Charles Coe for the United States

Team Rosters:

  • GB&I — Michael Bonallack, Alan Bussell, Joe Carr, Frank Deighton, Reid Jack, Philip Scrutton, Doug Sewell, Alec Shepperson, Alan Thirlwell, Guy Wolstenholme
  • USA — Rex Baxter, Arnold Blum, Joe Campbell, William C. Campbell, Bill Hyndman III, Chuck Kocsis, Billy Joe Patton, Hillman Robbins, Mason Rudolph, Bud Taylor
Notes: The final score appears comfortable, but during the trophy presentation the American captain Charles Coe remarked, "At about 3 o'clock this afternoon I thought the Walker Cup was halfway across the Atlantic."

That's because, at that point, there were three singles matches outstanding, the score was 5-3 in favor of the Americans, the all three matches were tied. Team USA wound up winning all three, however. The biggest highlight in those three was Billy Joe Patton coming from five down after the morning 18 (all matches were 36 holes) to beat British Amateur Championship winner Reid Jack, 1-up.

For Team GB&I, Michael Bonallack was named to the team for the first team, although he did not play in this one. He eventually competed in eight more Walker Cups and set GB&I records (since broken) for most Walker Cup match wins with eight and points earned with 9.5.

One year earlier, in the 1956 Curtis Cup, Bonallack's future wife Angela Ward played for Team GB&I, making them the first (and so far only) husband-and-wife to both compete in the Walker/Curtis Cups. Later, Bonallack's sister Sally played for Team GB&I in the 1962 Curtis Cup, making them the first (there have been more since) brother-sister combo to both play in the Walker/Curtis Cups.
