1969 Walker Cup Winner and Match Scores

The 1969 Walker Cup was the 22nd time this competition took place. Following the United States victory, the all-time standings were 20 wins for Team USA, one win for Team GB&I, one tie.

Final Score: United States 10, Great Britain & Ireland 8

Dates Played: August 22-23, 1969

Location: Milwaukee Country Club in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Team Captains: Michael Bonallack for Great Britain & Ireland, Billy Joe Patton for the United States

Team Rosters:

  • GB&I — Peter Benka, Andrew Brooks, Tom Craddock, Bruce Critchley, Rodney Foster, Charles Green, Michael King, Geoffrey Marks, Peter Tupling, Michael Bonallack (playing captain)
  • USA — John Bohmann, Bruce Fleisher, Vinny Giles, Bill Hyndman, Joe Inman, Steve Melnyk, Allen Miller, Dick Siderowf, Ed Updegraff, Lanny Wadkins
Notes: Team USA jumped out to a 7-3 lead at the end of Day 1, then had to hold on for a 10-8 victory. Team GB&I limited the Americans to just two wins in the Day 2 singles session.

One of the key matches happened on Day 1, however. In the singles match between GB&I's playing captain Michael Bonallack and 1968 U.S. Amateur champion Bruce Fleisher, Bonallack was 5-up with six holes to play. Fleischer then won five consecutive holes, and the match ended halved.

Six matches overall were halved. At this time in Walker Cup history, halved matches resulted in zero points being awarded. But the 1969 Walker Cup was last time that was true — beginning in 1971, a tied match resulted in both sides earning a half-point.
