Royal Liverpool is one of the storied links of England, opened in 1869 and part of the British Open rota. Credited architects are Robert Chambers, George Morris and Harry Colt. Royal Liverpool previously hosted the Walker Cup in 1983. Watson won the 1997 British Amateur and played in the Walker Cup that year. He was originally scheduled to captain Team GB&I in the 2017 Walker Cup, but had to withdraw that year due to a family illness.
