What Happened at the 1993 U.S. Open

Lee Janzen's final-round 69 capped off four consecutive rounds in the 60s and a 2-stroke victory. Janzen was just the second golfer in tournament history to post four sub-70s rounds, joining Lee Trevino who first did it in the 1968 U.S. Open. Janzen's winning score of 272 tied the then-tournament scoring record established by Jack Nicklaus in the 1980 U.S. Open. Like Janzen's, Nicklaus' 272 happened at Baltusrol.

Janzen took the lead after the second round, opening 67-67, and held onto it. He led by one over Payne Stewart entering the final round, and Stewart finished second after shooting 70 on Sunday.

Janzen and Stewart were mostly unchallenged in the final round, but Stewart definitely challenged Janzen. When Janzen three-putted the 12th green, he fell into a tie with Stewart for the lead. They shared that lead for a couple holes before Janzen birdied the 14th to re-take it.

On the 16th hole, Janzen appeared in trouble after missing the green. But he knocked in a 30-foot chip shot for a birdie. That gave him a two-stroke lead with three holes to play. Some good luck on the 17th hole helped Janzen hold on: He hit a wayward drive that hit a tree, but bounced into the fairway.
