What Happened at the 2003 U.S. Open
Jim Furyk claimed his first (and, as it turned out, only) major championship victory at the 2003 U.S. Open, played on the Chicago-area Olympia Fields Country Club. Furyk had one of the best-scoring U.S. Opens ever to this point, standing at 200 after three rounds, which set a 54-hole U.S. Open scoring record. That 200 put Furyk at 10-under par, making him just the third golfer to this point in the tournament's history to reach double-digits under par. He closed with a 2-over 72 in the final round, finishing at 8-under. But his 272 total tied the then-U.S. Open record for fewest strokes.
Another record-tying golfer in this Open was Vijay Singh, who carded a 63 in the second round that included a back-nine 29 (both scores matching records at the time). Singh was tied for second entering the final round, but ballooned to a 78 and finished tied for 20th.
The first-round co-leader was Tom Watson, who, at age 53, shot a 65. Watson's caddie, Bruce Edwards, was carrying Watson's bag only months after being diagnosed with the incurable disease ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Edwards, showing the effects of the disease that would kill him within a year, said of Watson's round, "He did it for me." Watson was still in the Top 10 at the halfway point but ultimately tied for 28th place.
Justin Rose, who went on to win the 2013 U.S. Open, tied for fifth place in his first Top 10 finish in this major. Defending champ Tiger Woods tied for 20th.
