2003 U.S. Open Golf Tournament

The 2003 U.S. Open was the 103rd one played; Jim Furyk was the winner with a record-tying score.

Winner: Jim Furyk, 272

Where it was played: Olympia Fields Country Club, Olympia Fields, Illinois

Tournament dates: June 12-15, 2003

Leader after first round: Brett Quigley and Tom Watson, 65

Leader after second round: Jim Furyk and Vijay Singh, 133

Leader after third round: Jim Furyk, 200

Notable Notes: Jim Furyk won his first major championship by shooting 272, tying the tournament scoring record (a record since broken).

Furyk opened with rounds of 67-66, but was tied for the second round lead when Vijay Singh shot a record-tying round of 63. Singh's third-round 72 dropped him off Furyk's pace, however; Furyk took a 3-stroke lead into the final round over journeyman Stephen Leaney.

And that's how they finished, Furyk first, Leaney second, margin of three strokes, after both closed with 72s.
