What Happened in the 2013 U.S. Open

Justin Rose won his first major championship title at the 2013 U.S. Open, overcoming a 2-stroke deficit and Phil Mickelson to do it.

Mickelson, who already held the tournament record with five runner-up finishes, was trying for his first U.S. Open win. He took the first-round lead with a 67, shared the lead after two rounds, and held the lead following the third round. Mickelson's lead entering the final round was one over Hunter Mahan, Charl Schwartzel and Steve Stricker. Rose was two behind Mickelson.

Rose played an up-and-down final round that wound up coming out even, as in even-par 70. He carded five bogeys, but matched that with five birdies. Among the leaders entering the final round, Rose was the only one not to shoot above par.

Mickelson had a difficult start to the final round that included double-bogeys at Nos. 3 and 5 (though with a birdie sandwiched between). However, when he pitched in for eagle at No. 10, Mickelson was back in the lead. But after No. 10, Mickelson failed to make any birdies, while there were three bogeys on his scorecard.

Of the three golfers who were one shot behind entering Round 4, only Mahan kept himself in it for most of the round. But eventually he finished tied for fourth, four shots behind Rose. Schwartzel struggled to a 78, while Stricker had a 76.

It was the culmination of a long climb for Rose, who, at age 17, finished tied for fourth at the 1998 British Open as an amateur. He immediately turned pro, but spent his first couple years missing cuts — at one point, 21 consecutively. But eventually he began fulfilling that early promise, winning on the European Tour for the first time in 2002, and on the PGA Tour for the first time in 2010. By the time of his victory here, Rose was considered among the best golfers yet to win a major.

By winning here, Rose was the first English golfer to win a major since Nick Faldo at the 1996 Masters, the first Englishman to win a U.S. Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.

Two-time U.S. Open champ Ernie Els was among those tied for fourth place. It was Els' last Top 10 finish in this major.
