What Happened in the 2012 U.S. Open

Webb Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open by one stroke over Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson. It was Simpson's first win in a major championship and just his third overall victory on the PGA Tour. Simpson earned the win by shooting 68-68 on the weekend over the challenging Lake Course at Olympic Club (where another Simpson, Scott — no relation — won the 1987 U.S. Open).

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell played in the final pairing of the fourth round, with Simpson, who began that final round four strokes off the lead, several groups ahead. Furyk led or shared the lead all day until his 13th hole, when he bogeyed to drop to 1-over. That was the same score Simpson was on, too, after birdying his 10th hole earlier.

Following the birdie on No. 10, Simpson parred in to post a score of 1-over 281.

Furyk, the 2003 U.S. Open winner, stayed at 1-over himself until trouble started on the 16th tee. There, Furyk hit a bad snap hook into the trees. He bogeyed the 16th and the 18th holes and fell into a tie for fourth, two strokes off Simpson's winning total.

McDowell, champion at the 2010 U.S. Open, birdied the 17th hole to get within one of Simpson. And McDowell had a birdie putt on the last hole to force a playoff, but didn't make it. He wound up tied second with Michael Thompson, who had finished runner-up once before at Olympic Club. At the 2007 U.S. Amateur played at Olympic Club, Thompson lost the championship match to Colt Knost, 2 and 1.

The week got off to a flying start with Nick Watney scoring a double-eagle in the first round, only the third albatross in U.S. Open history. Watney holed out from 190 yards with a 5-iron on his second shot at the par-5 17th hole.

A couple amateurs also made news at the 2012 U.S. Open. Seventeen-year-old Beau Hossler briefly led during the second round before falling back to finish tied for 29th. And 14-year-old Andy Zhang became the youngest U.S. Open player to this point when he teed off in Round 1. Zhang missed the cut.

Jordan Spieth, just 18 years old, made his major championship debut here and tied for 21st to earn low-amateur honors. Among those tied with Spieth was Tiger Woods, who was one of the 36-hole co-leaders before weekend troubles. Another amateur and future major champ making his major championship debut here was Brooks Koepka, but Koepka missed the cut.
