What Happened in the 2006 Open Championship
Tiger Woods stayed away from his driver, and that decision drove him to his third British Open victory. Woods hit driver only once the entire tournament, a decision he made due to the very dry course conditions. Since the ball was rolling great distances, he hit irons off nearly every tee, keeping control and avoiding trouble.Woods led Chris DiMarco by one stroke after both the second and third rounds, and won by two over DiMarco. Woods and DiMarco had battled in a playoff at the 2005 Masters, but here Woods shot 67 in the final round to win in regulation. His 270 total tied the tournament's then-record for 72 holes.
The 67 Woods carded in Round 4 was tied for lowest final round. And the 65 he had in Round 2 was tied for lowest score of that round.
This was Woods' second consecutive win in The Open Championship and his third overall in this major. It was his 11th career win in a major championship, and his 49th overall victory on the PGA Tour.
