1992 Solheim Cup: Europe's First Win

This was the second time the Solheim Cup was played. After the European victory, the overall standings in the event's history was USA 1, Europe 1.

Final Score: Europe 11.5, USA 6.5

Dates Played: October 2-4, 1992

Location: Dalmahoy Country Club in Edinburgh, Scotland

Team Captains: Kathy Whitworth/Alice Miller for Team USA and Mickey Walker for Team Europe. Whitworth was named United States captain, but had to leave the competition due to a family emergency. Miller then stepped in for Whitworth.

Team Rosters:

  • Europe — Helen Alfredsson, Laura Davies, Florence Descampe, Kitrina Douglas, Trish Johnson, Liselotte Neumann, Alison Nicholas, Catrin Nilsmark, Dale Reid, Pamela Wright
  • USA — Danielle Ammaccapane, Pat Bradley, Brandie Burton, Beth Daniel, Juli Inkster, Betsy King, Meg Mallon, Dottie Pepper, Deb Richard, Patty Sheehan
Match Notes: When the Solheim Cup was first proposed in early 1990, one of the concerns was that the U.S. players would dominate the European players (this concern was chiefly expressed by representatives of the European tour). Could a new competition survive if one side dominated the other? Team USA did dominate the 1990 Solheim Cup. But those concerns were laid to rest at the 1992 Solheim Cup when Team Europe was the one that did the dominating.

Laura Davies led the way for Europe, going 3-0-0. Davies teamed with Alison Nicholas to win two matches, and beat Brandie Burton in singles. Helen Alfredsson added a 2-0-1 mark for Europe, while Pat Bradley and Dottie Pepper both struggled for the U.S. side with 0-2-1 records each. Europe had only a one-point lead going into the singles session, but then won that final session by a 7-3 score. Davies, Alfredsson and Trish Johnson won the first three singles matches played. Johnson, who played in eight Solheim Cups total, beat Patty Sheehan in singles — the only win she had in eight career singles matches.

The teams were expanded from the eight players per side used in 1990 to 10 players each in 1992. But the organizers stuck with four foursomes matches and four fourball matches on Days 1 and 2, respectively, meaning that two players per side had to sit out each of those sessions.
