Where it was played: The Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland

Tournament dates: July 15-18, 2010

Leader after third round: Louis Oosthuizen, 201

What Happened in the 2010 Open Championship

Louis Oosthuizen, who was little-heralded at the time, took the lead after 36 holes and never let it go. Oosthuizen's lead after Round 2 was five strokes, it was four after the third round, and he won by seven.

This year marked the 150th anniversary of the tournament's founding. The Open Championship was first played in 1860. So Oosthuizen was not just a first-time major winner, but also The Open's sesquicentennial champion. (Due to gaps, mostly caused by wartime, this was the 139th time the Open was played, even though it was the 150th anniversary.)

Rory McIlroy tied The Open's 18-hole scoring record with a 63 in the first round, but in very high winds on Day 2 McIlroy soared to an 80. He came back to finish tied for third.

Oosthuizen opened with a 65 and was in second place, two behind McIlroy, after Round 1. A 67 in Round 2 gave Oosthuizen the 5-stroke, 36-hole lead, and he scored 201 in Round 3. Paul Casey was four back, in second place, going into the final round, and Martin Kaymer was in third but seven behind.

Casey was still in contention in the final round through 11 holes. But on the 12th, Casey made a triple bogey while Oosthuizen birdied. It was a cruise to victory after that for Oosthuizen.
