Notable notes: Vic Ghezzi defeated Byron Nelson in the championship match by a 1-up score on the second extra hole. Nelson led 3-up after 27 holes, but Ghezzi won the first three holes of the final nine to square it. On the 36th hole, Ghezzi had a four-foot putt for the win, but missed. Finally, on the 38th hole, and after Nelson missed a three-footer, Ghezzi knocked in his own three-footer for the win. ... This was one of three times Nelson lost in the PGA championship match. He also won the tournament twice. ... To reach the final, Ghezzi defeated Joe Pezzullo, August Nordone, Jack Grout, Jimmy Hines and Lloyd Mangrum.
