1929 British Open Winner and Scores

The 1929 British Open was the 64th time this major was played. Walter Hagen was the winner, and it proved to be the last of his 11 career wins in major championships.

Where it was played: Muirfield links in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland

Tournament dates: May 8-10, 1929

Leader after first round: Percy Alliss, 69

Leader after second round: Leo Diegel, 140

Leader after third round: Walter Hagen, 218

What Happened in the 1929 Open Championship

Walter Hagen won the last of his four Open Championships, while Harry Vardon played this tournament for the final time at the 1929 British Open.

Vardon, age 59, missed the cut in what was his 27th and last appearance. Six of those appearances resulted in victories; Vardon finished in the Top 10 20 out of 27 times playing, including 15 consecutive years from 1894-1908.

Hagen's previous victories in the British Open happened in 1922, 1924 and 1928. After winning here, Hagen played the British Open only twice more, in 1933 and 1937. It was his 11th overall win in a major championship. And although Hagen had more wins in "regular" tournaments still to come, he did not win any more majors after this. (He still ranks third in most major championship victories today.)

Hagen shot three rounds of 75, but also had a 67 in the second round. That 67 was a tournament record at the time, and it's what vaulted Hagen into contention. Scoring conditions were so tough on the 36-hole final day that Hagen pulled away to a 6-stroke win with two 75s.

Johnny Farrell, the 1928 U.S. Open winner, was runner-up, and this was one of two Top 5 finishes for him in the Open Championship. And Leo Diegel, also a major winner in 1928 at the PGA Championship, finished third.
