Player of the Year Award Winners on the PGA Tour
The PGA of America's Player of the Year award (which was officially titled the PGA Player of the Year) was discontinued after last being awarded in 2022. It was based on a points system, and had been around since 1948. The PGA Tour's Player of the Year award was introduced in 1990, and is based on a vote by the players themselves. Because the PGA of America's award was the original one, and was much older, for many years — even after the PGA Tour's own award came along — the PGA's was considered more prestigious. That had long since ceased to be the case, however, by the time the PGA of America decided to discontinue its own award after 2022.
This explains how our list of award winners that follows is organized. It starts with just one name per year, which is the winner of the PGA Tour Player of the Year award. But from 2022 back through 1990, there are two names listed — the PGA of America winner, and the PGA Tour winner (the same player usually, but not always, won both). And prior to 1990, only one golfer is listed because the PGA of America's award is the only one that was given out at that time.
