What Happened in the 2013 PGA Championship
Jason Dufner won the 2013 PGA Championship, making up for a failure just two years earlier at this major. At the 2011 PGA Championship, Dufner led by four strokes with four holes to play. But he lost that lead, was tied by Keegan Bradley, and then Bradley defeated Dufner in the playoff.Dufner made sure there was no playoff this time, winning by two strokes over Jim Furyk. Dufner did bogey the final two holes of the tournament, but so did Furyk. Those were Dufner's first bogeys since the eighth hole of the third round.
Dufner took the lead in the second round by shooting 63, tying the 18-hole scoring record in the PGA Championship and for all majors, and establishing a new competitive course record on the East Course at Oak Hill.
Furyk shot 68 to Dufner's 71 in the third round, so Dufner entered the final round one stroke behind Furyk's lead. But Dufner birdied three of the first eight holes in the final round to move in front, and added another birdie on the 16th hole for a cushion.
It was Dufner's first win in a major, his third victory on the PGA Tour. Furyk was trying to win his second major; his first was at the 2003 U.S. Open. It was Furyk's third runner-up finish in a major and his sixth Top 5 in a major since that 2003 major win.
Tiger Woods was never a factor, and his failure to win here completed his fifth season since his last win in a major. Phil Mickelson, several weeks removed from winning the 2013 British Open, finished near the bottom among those who made the cut. Defending champ Rory McIlroy briefly appeared like he would challenge in the final round, but a triple-bogey derailed the effort and he finished tied for eighth place.
Future multiple-major winner Jordan Spieth played the PGA Championship for the first time this year, missing the cut at age 20.
