Notable Notes: In May, Bobby Jones won the British Amateur Championship. In June, he won the British Open — the first golfer since John Ball in 1890 to win both in the same year. ... Jones then went home to the USA and won the U.S. Open in July and U.S. Amateur in September, completing what was then considered the Grand Slam. It is the only single-season Grand Slam in men's golf history. ... Jones shared the lead after Round 1 and held it outright following Round 2. But in Round 3, Archie Compston shot 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Jones. ... Compston, though, soared to an 82 in the final round. Jones shot 75 and won by two strokes. ...
