Notable notes: Ben Hogan defeated Mike Turnesa in the championship final by a 7-and-6 score. ... Hogan won another major a few weeks later at the 1948 U.S. Open. But early in 1949, he suffered terrible injuries in a car wreck. He never played the PGA Championship again during its match-play era due to the grind of 36-hole matches. ... To reach the final, Hogan defeated Jock Hutchinson Jr., Johnny Palmer, Gene Sarazen, Chick Harbert and Jimmy Demaret.
