What Happened in the 1904 U.S. Open

At the 1904 U.S. Open, Willie Anderson won this title for the second year in a row, and the third time overall. He thus became the U.S. Open's first back-to-back winner, and its first 3-time champ.

Anderson was two strokes off the lead entering the final round, but he carded a 72 in Round 4 — the lowest score in tournament history to this point. Anderson's winning total of 303 was five strokes clear of runnerup Gilbert Nicholls, and was also the lowest 72-hole total to this point in a U.S. Open.

Anderson went on to win again in 1905, and remains, to the present day, the only golfer to win three consecutive U.S. Opens.

The 1904 U.S. Open was played at Glen View Club in Illinois, over two days: July 8-9, 1904, 36 holes both days. This was the first U.S. Open to have a cut after 36 holes — golfers more than 15 strokes out of 10th place after 36 holes were eliminated. In the third round, Walter Egan turned in a score of 100. Egan is the last player to make the cut and then score 100 or more in a U.S. Open round.
