The 1982 PGA Championship was the 64th time the tournament was played. The winner claimed this major trophy for the second time in his career, leading from start to finish.

What Happened in the 1982 PGA Championship
When Raymond Floyd opened with a tournament-tying 63 — just the second 63 ever shot in this major — he set the tone for the rest of the week: He was in charge. And it wasn't the only tournament record at that time that Floyd matched or set: His 132 score after two rounds and 200 total following the third round were also records (both later broken). He led wire-to-wire and wound up with a three-stroke victory that was actually more dominating than that margin indicates.Bob Gilder and Greg Norman carded first-round 66s, but couldn't stay with Floyd, who followed his 63 with middle rounds of 69 and 68. Entering the final round, it was clear that Floyd was going to win. Lanny Wadkins finished second, three strokes behind Floyd, but had to shoot 67 to Floyd's final-around 72 to get that close.
Closing with that 72 cost Floyd another tournament record. When he reached the 72nd hole, he looked to have a good chance to break the tournament scoring record of 271 established by Bobby Nichols in the 1964 PGA Championship. Floyd double bogeyed that hole, however, and Nichols' record stood until the 1994 PGA Championship, also played at Southern Hills.
For the 39-year-old Floyd, it was his second win at the PGA Championship, 13 years after his first in the 1969 PGA Championship. It was the third of his four career wins in majors, and it was the 18th of his 22 career PGA Tour wins.
The 1982 PGA was the first one played by Payne Stewart (he missed the cut), who went on to win the 1989 PGA Championship. The tournament was played in very hot conditions in Oklahoma — the temperature reached 104 degrees on the first day and topped 100 on Day 2, with high humidity, as well.
