1923 British Open Winner and Scores

The 1923 British Open was the 58th time this major was played, and a final-hole bunker hole-out provided the winning margin.

Winner: Arthur Havers, 295

Where it was played: Troon Golf Club in Troon, Ayrshire, Scotland

Tournament dates: June 14-15, 1923

Leader after first round: Joe Kirkwood Sr., 72

Leader after second round: Arthur Havers and Charles Whitcombe, 146

Leader after third round: Arthur Havers, 219

Notable Notes: Arthur Havers led defending champ Walter Hagen by two strokes entering the final round. ... Havers finished first and posted 295 after holing out from a bunker on the 18th hole. ... When Hagen reached the final hole, he, too, wound up in that bunker. But Hagen's bunker shot — which he needed to hole to force a playoff — just missed. ... This was the first Open played at Troon, which was blasted by gale-force winds at times. In the qualifying round, Aubrey Boomer's bunker shot was caught in the wind, which forced the ball back and dropped it into his jacket pocket.
