1934 British Open Winner and Scores

The 1934 British Open was the 69th time this major was played. It was the first of an eventual three Open wins for the champion.

Winner: Henry Cotton, 283

Where it was played: Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, England

Tournament dates: June 27-29, 1934

Leader after first round: Henry Cotton, 67

Leader after second round: Henry Cotton, 65

Leader after third round: Henry Cotton, 204

Notable Notes: It was a wire-to-wire win for Henry Cotton and one of the most impressive performances to date in the Open. ... Cotton opened 67-65, shattering the 36-hole Open scoring record. The 65 was a new 18-hole tournament record. ... Following the third round, Cotton led by 10 strokes. So despite shooting 79 in the final round, he still won by six and tied the 72-hole Open scoring record of 283. ... Cotton's second-round 65 was so famous in its day that the Dunlop 65 golf ball was named in its honor. ... From 1930 through 1948, Cotton finished in the Top 10 in all but one British Open played (and he finished 13th in the other one). From 1930 through 1952, Cotton finished in the Top 10 of every British Open but one that he played.
