What Happened in the 1924 U.S. Open Golf Tournament

Cyril Walker denied defending champion Bobby Jones a second straight U.S. Open title, pulling away in the final round to win the 1924 U.S. Open.

Walker began the final round tied with Jones for the lead, then shot 75. That doesn't sound impressive until you realize that Walker's 75 was the second-best score of the final round over Oakland Hills' South Course.

This was the first U.S. Open and first major played at Oakland Hills, a track that three decades later would be called "this monster" by Ben Hogan following the 1951 U.S. Open.

Walker was the only player to finish the tournament below 300. Jones scored 78 in the final round, and a majority of the field failed to break 80 in Round 4.

The USGA's tournament history called Walker, who weighed 118 pounds at the time of this win, the U.S. Open's second-lightest champion. Fred McLeod weighed only 108 pounds at the time of his victory in the 1908 U.S. Open.

For Walker, this was the high point — by a long shot — of his tour life. He did record a couple other PGA Tour wins, but had only one other Top 10 finish in a stroke-play major. He was known as one of the slowest golfers of his time, perhaps one of the slowest golfers of all-time. (See our bio of Cyril Walker for more about this, including the time he was "arrested" for slow play.)

Walker was the club pro at Englewood Golf Club in Englewood, N.J., in 1924. A native of England, he worked several club pro jobs in America and also won a handful of state opens. He had a small fortune that was mostly wiped out during the Great Depression. Walker increasingly turned to drink, and wound up dying in jail cell in 1948.
