What Happened in the 1998 U.S. Open
Entering the final round, it was Payne Stewart's tournament to lose, and he lost it. Or, rather, Lee Janzen won it.Stewart led by four strokes entering the final round, and by five over Janzen. Stewart's final-round 74 was not terrible, but Janzen's 68 was much better. Good enough to generate a one-stroke victory for Janzen, who won the U.S. Open for the second time.
At one point in the final round, Janzen trailed Stewart by seven strokes. In one of the previous times Olympic Club hosted the tournament, the 1966 U.S. Open, Billy Casper also came back from seven down in the final round to win.
Stewart held the outright lead following each of the first three rounds. Tom Lehman and Bob Tway shared second place after the third round, four behind Stewart. But Tway scored 73 and Lehman 75 in Round 4.
Janzen bogeyed the second and third holes of his final round, and at that point fell seven behind Stewart. But he made four birdies and no bogeys the rest of the way. Stewart had bogeys on No. 4, 7 and 12, at which point his lead over Janzen was down to one.
But after Janzen birdied No. 13 and Stewart bogeyed it, Janzen went in front for the first time. Stewart birdied No. 14 to regain a share of the lead, but then bogeyed No. 16. Janzen parred the final five holes for the one-stroke victory. Stewart was also the runner-up to Janzen when Janzen won the 1993 U.S. Open.
Jack Nicklaus tied for 43rd place at age 58. It was the last time the 4-time U.S. Open champ made the cut in this major, his second-to-last made cut in any of the majors.
