What Happened in the 1999 PGA Championship

One of the most-famous golf shots of the late 20th century was struck by 19-year-old Sergio Garcia during the final round of the 1999 PGA Championship. But it was another youngster, Tiger Woods, who actually claimed the trophy.

Garcia would go on to have a testy relationship with golf fans, media and sometimes fellow players over the ensuing years, but here he was all innocence and youthful exuberance. And he was a very popular challenger to Woods.

Garcia was the youngest player in the PGA Championship since Gene Sarazen played at age 19 in 1921. But Garcia held the first-round lead with a 66. Woods opened with a 70, was two strokes back after two rounds, and shared the third-round lead. (Mike Weir was Woods' 54-hole co-leader, with Garcia two behind. But Weir was never a factor in the final round, ballooning to 80.)

Woods had as much as a five-stroke lead at one point in the final round, but Garcia chipped away. His famous shot happened on the 16th hole after his ball came to rest among the roots of a large tree, very nearly up against the trunk itself. Garcia took a mighty whack, closing his eyes at impact, then raced up the fairway after the ball, leaping into the air to get a better look. A remarkable shot, it found the green:

Garcia parred that hole, but Woods bogeyed and Tiger's lead was only one. Woods saved par after an errant tee shot on the par-3 17th, but Garcia was unable to birdie either of the final two holes. Woods two-putted the last green for his first PGA Championship victory and second major title.

It seemed at the time a sure thing that Woods, 23 years old at the time, and Garcia were destined to battle it out for PGA Tour supremacy. We all know how that turned out, but at least we'll always have Medinah.

Payne Stewart played in his final PGA Championship — his final major — here, tying for 57th place. Stewart, a three-time major winner, died in a plane crash in October 1999.
