2009 U.S. Open Tournament Winner, Scores

The 2009 U.S. Open was the 109th time this major championship was played. And one famous golfer who came up short set a new tournament record.

Winner: Lucas Glover, 276

Where it was played: Bethpage Black, Farmingdale, New York

Tournament dates: June 18-22, 2009

Leader after first round: Mike Weir, 64

Leader after second round: Ricky Barnes, 132

Leader after third round: Ricky Barnes, 202

What Happened in the 2009 U.S. Open

Due to rains throughout the event, the 2009 U.S. Open tournament concluded on Monday. Then, Lucas Glover finished a final round of 73 to win by two strokes.

And one of the golfers two behind Glover was Phil Mickelson. For Mickelson, it was the fifth time he finished second in a U.S. Open. That set a new tournament record for most runner-up finishes, one that Mickelson later extended with his sixth second-place showing in the 2013 U.S. Open. Mickelson, one of the all-time greats, won six other majors, but never won a U.S. Open.

Ricky Barnes was the leader following the third round, which, due to the rains, wasn't completed until Sunday. Barnes led second-place Glover by one stroke as the final round started, with Mickelson tied for fifth, six behind Barnes and five behind Glover.

The final pairing, Barnes and Glover, completed only two holes of the final round on Sunday before darkness halted play, necessitating the Monday finish. Barnes bogeyed five of the first nine holes en route to a 76, although he did recover enough to finish tied for second place with Mickelson and David Duval. Duval got into the fight with birdies on 14, 15 and 16, but bogeyed No. 17. (It was Duval's first Top 10 finish in a major since 2001, and proved to be his last.)

Mickelson, the fan favorite, put a charge into the crowd when he eagled the 13th hole to tie for the lead, but then bogeyed the 15th and 17th holes.

Glover, however, recovered from a 15th-hole bogey with a birdie on No. 16, then closed with two pars to win by two strokes. It was only Glover's second win on the PGA Tour.

Rory McIlroy played in the U.S. Open for the first time this year and tied for 10th place.
