What Happened in the 2001 U.S. Open
Retief Goosen blew a chance to win the 2001 U.S. Open on the 72nd green. But then he did win it after the 90th hole, beating Mark Brooks in an 18-hole playoff. After the third round, Goosen and Stewart Cink were tied for the lead. Brooks was tied for third, one stroke behind. And after 17 holes of the final round, all three were tied for the lead.
But Brooks, playing one group in front of Goosen and Cink, three-putted the 18th green to bogey and drop one behind. Goosen and Cink were both in the fairway off the tee, but Cink overshot the green on his approach. Then he, like Brooks, three-putted. It was a double bogey for Cink, who finished solo third.
Goosen, however, hit a good approach to 10 feet. He missed the birdie try, but had only two feet remaining to win the tournament. But Goosen missed that 2-footer, another 3-putt bogey, to drop into a tie with Brooks.
In the 18-hole playoff, Goosen had a 3-stroke lead after nine holes. But when Brooks bogeyed No. 10 while Goosen birdied it, Goosen took a 5-stroke lead. And Goosen wound up winning by two, 70 to 72.
It was the first of Goosen's two career wins in majors; he also won the 2004 U.S. Open. For Brooks, who had won the 1996 PGA Championship, it was the last time he finished in the Top 10 in a major. Cink went on to win the 2009 British Open.
This was the tournament where Tiger Woods' streak of four consecutive wins in majors — the so-called Tiger Slam — came to an end. Woods tied for 12th place.
Fifty-year-old Tom Kite, the 1992 U.S. Open winner, tied for fifth place. It was his final Top 10 finish in a major. Three-time U.S. Open winner Hale Irwin, age 56, made the cut for the last time in any of the majors and tied for 52nd place.
